I work between painting and printmaking, which often bounce off each other to create a series of works. Photography, drawing, and note making are crucial to my practice and act like a machine in the background to everything I create. I use the outside world as an influence, drawn to big topics, whether political, the hierarchy of society, or poverty. I steer my photographic eye accordingly, resulting in a continuous body of photographs, initial notes, and drawings that I use to create finalised work.
Mental health is different for every person and has drawn me down a path in my recent work of representing what life is… I mean what it really is… outside of the constraints of society, constantly reaching for the next thing, and not ‘afraid’ to let someone fall behind. I'm interested in our pace of life in today's nonstop world.
Previous works explored direct observations through still life, and figurative works on paper and canvas. The recent body of work uses clouds to reflect on that consistently ‘on the go’ feel of what it's like to be constantly moving, changing, unique, and unnoticed. My paintings are more intuitive and ‘natural’, emulating life and living in the moment, which reflects how I view the world and how my practice evolves.
My work uses layers, flattening the image, so foreground and background are in flux, creating small fragments and a lucid reflection of humanity, mortality and presence. Movement occurs through abstract tonal shapes appearing, disappearing, reappearing until finally fixed.
Being present is key for the creative process, and with that I invite you to simply sit down, take a second or two, and breathe… the rest, as it should be, is completely out of my control.
The works aim to offer respite and release.
